Dear Riding Community

We are proud to announce Glenellen Farm as the selected venue for the 2012 Cape Town FEI Show Jumping World Cup Qualifier and Western Province Show Jumping Championship from 21 – 25 November 2012. This year’s championships will be hosted by Cape Town Show Jumping, an independent equestrian event body that was established with the sole purpose of putting this prestigious final, as well as Cape Town as a show jumping capital, on the map.

We are very grateful to Judy Louw for allowing us to use Glenellen Farm once again to host this highly regarded show jumping championship and over the next 8 months the grounds will become a beehive of activity in preparation for the big event.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Trish Zschenderlein

Trish Zschenderlein passed away on the 10th of February - this is a small tribute to the life she led

I cannot remember the first time I met Trish – but Trish made an impact from Day one.  Trish has been my instructor, mentor and friend for over 10 years and I will miss her more than words can describe.  To me Trish was so much more than just an instructor, our lesson consisted of not only working with my horses but also a good chat / therapy / support whatever, but I loved every single one of my lessons – my last lesson with Trish was the 10th Feb, I still have the sms she sent to me: “Thank you Codi – 2dys lsn best therapy eva”

The younger set might not know that much about Trish – well here goes:  Trish started riding at about 12 in Johannesburg and during school trained at show jumper Georgie Peerman’s yard.  After school Trish trained as a veterinary nurse and whilst working at Sandown VeterinaryHospital was involved in the recovery of the Lipizzaner Stallion – Maestoso Erdem and met his owner George Iwanowski– the impact of this is what led Trish to become involved in Dressage.  Trish rode with the SA Lipizzaner team and in actual fact was their lead rider! Trish rode to advanced level and competed in two SA Dressage Derby Finals.

This led to judging and what an impact Trish had on judging in SA – from Provincial level to National A panel and an International Candidate Dressage Judge – that was Trish. Trish judged at 25 South African Adult Dressage Championships, numerous Junior and Pony Rider Championships, and also judged with Stephen Clarke (an international judge from UK) and let’s not forget the fact that she also judged at overseas events.

Her CV as a judge is huge but Trish’s best love was teaching.   The horses always came first for Trish – She had soo much empathy with the horses – I have yet to meet a horse that Trish taught that did not love her.  If you had a break in your lesson for her to explain something to you the horses would automatically gravitate towards Trish for a pat, stroke or kind words.  Let’s not forget her instructions when you did an incorrect movement:  “Don’t mind me – in your test just tell the judge you want to try again!”

Trish with her husband Dieter, son Mike and daughter Kerry have lived in nearly every province in SA, Kyalami, KZN, Treesbank, and Port Elizabeth before finally settling in Cape Town in 1988.  Trish leaves a huge void in so many lives – but we have been so lucky to have had the privilege of calling her a friend, a teacher, a judge, a sister,  a mother and a wife.

Trish – there is so much more – I can go on for pages.  Your impact on so many human and animal lives will be remembered for always.

I salute you for the life you led and way you lived it – To you Trish!

Trish’s memorial service will be held at the Durbanville Methodist Church, Saturday, 17 March at 1:30 pm.  No flowers please, as Trish requested donations to the South African Guide Dog Association:  http://www.guidedog.org.za/   Trish also requested that those attending the service – please no dark colours, bright and cheery – to celebrate her life.

Anyone who would like to send a tribute no matter how long or short please do so - send it to merri.spratley01@gmail.com . I will be sending them all on to the family.

 VERY IMPORTANT NOTICE

Passports

This note is to remind you that every horse/pony must have an official Passport (SAEA Gen. Reg. 05.5.1), which must you must have with you at all shows and when travelling with your horse. This is to prove that horse inoculations are up-to-date. A secondary importance is the requirement to keep track of the horse and its qualification to enter shows at a particular level.
Efforts are currently being made to simplify/reduce regulations around AHS. Therefore it is imperative inoculations and passports are up-to-date, because any found to have irregularities will be detrimental to this initiative. All of us living in the Cape know of the difficulties around AHS and will benefit most from a change in regulations.
Passport inspections are mandatory for CN status shows and above, where a horse with an inaccurate passport will not be allowed to compete unless specifically approved by the SAEA Representative. (SAEA Gen. Reg. 05.5.6). The Regional Bodies have the responsibility to ensure that all passports are correct for all shows, regardless of level. SAEA also provides for fines for inaccurate passports in Gen. Regs. Appendix GR/B.
In respect of omissions of a mandatory requirement                                                                      R100.00
In respect of inoculations against African Horse sickness not up to date                                  R200.00
In respect to inoculations against Equine influenza
·         Less than 4 weeks out of date                                                                                                           R200.00
·         Less than 5 weeks out of date                                                                                                           R300.00
·         Less than 7 weeks out of date                                                                                                           R400.00
·         More than seven weeks out of date                     R500.00 and cancellation of the horses entry
The WPHS Executive committee have decided that a major effort must be made to ensure that all Members and in fact all with horses have passports that are correctly up-to-date. It was also decided that we would give people time to get their passports up-to-date before fining them to the full extent that is allowed. Therefore you have until the 31 March 2012 to get Passports up-to-date. There will be no fines until after that date except for irregularities in respect to inoculations, where fines will continue to be imposed.
Fines at recent NRA show
The WPHS Executive Committee has decided that fining at this below CN status show was being overzealous. Therefore fines for passport irregularities will be refunded on presentation of a correctly updated passport, except for those in respect to inoculations, where the fine will stand.
Richard Beck, Chairman WPHS

A reminder to all riders .

The beginning  of the year is a good time to remind us all of a couple of points.

 1.              Please make the job of Show Organisers and the WP Office easier by filling in entry forms clearly and correctly.

2.             If your horse’s name changes, make sure the office is informed, otherwise you may miss out on points or Qualifying Rounds.

3.             Remember it is essential that you take out Public Liability Insurance on your horse. Check your household policy to see if it’s included, otherwise there are several companies that offer- it is very inexpensive.

4.             If you are allowed to ride without a jacket, and you are not wearing a registered golf shirt, remember that your shirt must cover your shoulders

5.             It is LEFT to LEFT in the warm-up arena!!

6.            Please inform the organizer if you are not going to a show- it’s only polite.

7.             The jumps in the warm-up arena should never be more than 10cm higher than the competition in progress, and competitors should be considerate when jumping in the practice arena.

8.            You may not hold a horse in the warm-up arena- all horses must be ridden.

The Vaulters are looking for a new horse!!

The requirements are thus;

It needs to be a Gelding of  at least 17 hands, a Warmblood or Thoroughbred Cross, quiet on the lunge, with a good canter, especially on the left rein. It should be 7yrs old, or more, with no back or leg problems. It needs to be easy to tack up and have a good nature in the stable (this is the sort of temprament they need). The back must not be too short!. ( Can`t fit enough Vaulters on!!)

They would prefer a horse that is barefoot behind, but this is not essential.

If you think you have or know of the perfect horse, please contact our Vaulting Chairman, Hilde Ocenasek on hocenasek@hotmail.com

The Equestrian Qualifications Authority of Southern Africa (EQASA)

EQASA’s  vision  is:

  • ?  To address all equine and equestrian educational assessment needs for the benefit of all and to grow pride in certified knowledge.

  • ?  To promote recognition of the variety of professions and qualified professionals in the horse industry.

Since 1976, Equestrian Education in southern Africa has achieved substantial growth across many learning pathways through certification, formerly under the banner of the SANEF National Instructors’  Plan (NIP). Equine and equestrian industry needs and the changing educational environment of the world in general and South Africa in particular, determined that the scope and reach of the NIP programmes required a transformation of the NIP into EQASA.

All   qualifications   and   skills   development   certificates   issued   by   the   SANEF   National   Instructors’   Plan   (from   1976 to 2011) remain valid. As of January 2012, equine and equestrian certificates and qualifications will be issued by EQASA.

Coaches of equestrian sporting disciplines and riding instructors (International Level One) and up are invited to join the EQASA Coaches Association.

Examinations and assessments are conducted through the year at regional examination centers. Should any additional venue require our services we will be happy to travel to you should numbers be feasible. Please feel free to contact us for further information.

In addition to a variety of stand alonesubject skills competency certifications, eight levels of full qualifications are offered. The qualifications are ranked and progression to a next level is obtained on completion of sequential modules:

The EQASA Certificate of Stable Yard Skills - Stage 1 (Module 1)
The EQASA Certificate of Stable Yard Skills - Stage 2 (Module 2)
The EQASA Certificate of Horsemastership (Module 3)
The EQASA Certificate of Horsemastership and Preliminary Riding Instruction (Module 4) The EQASA Certificate of Horsemastership & Riding Instruction - Level 1 (Module 5)

The EQASA Certificate of Horsemanship, Horsemastership & Riding Instruction - Level 2 (Mod 6)

The EQASA Certificate of Horsemanship, Horsemastership & Riding Instruction - Level 3 (Mod 7) The EQASA National Discipline Coaches Register (RPL process of Assessment)

Through our membership of the International Group for Equestrian Qualifications, holders of the EQASA Instructors’  Certificate  (Levels  1,  2  or  3) are entitled to apply for International Equestrian Passports.

Candidates  from  countries  beyond  South  Africa’s  borders are welcomed.

A recognized Level One Certificate in First Aid is compulsory at Modules 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. Candidates may take the examinations prior to obtaining a First Aid Certificate, but EQASA qualifications are only awarded once candidates are in possession of a current First Aid Certificate.

Practical experience is a prerequisite. Candidates are responsible for self-study and are reminded that EQASA does not offer any preparedness training for an exam. Attendance of any training course is undertaken by the individual of their own free will and is not a compulsory requirement for the examinations. EQASA welcomes structured training initiatives but, does not endorse, accredit or recommend any one establishment. It is suggested that candidates looking to further their education with private initiative establishments ensure that the training body is a member of the EQASA Coaches Association and is registered with the relevant educational authorities.

Western Riding; Vaulting; Driving; Therapeutic (in association with SARDA) and Equestrian Tourism qualifications are internationally recognized. Endurance; Saddle Seat; Polocrosse; Mounted Games; Tentpegging and Polo Coaching Qualifications are also offered by EQASA.
Candidates of these disciplines are required to complete the Module one, two and three components. The requirements for levels 4 and up are provided on request.

Past and aspirant examination candidates will need to register on the website. This registration will provide you with membership of EQASA and give you access to our services.
